Beatas

Here’s a curious little bunch of beauties, known as beatas – the local gossipers. Łey are usually middle aged women – spinsters and widows. Łey move in groups or in pairs and are always to be found buzzing around the market place or in the vicinity of the local church, exchanging in hoarse whispers the latest bit of scandal. Accountant

Pundolica Xembu Pissurlencar is a devout Hindu and vegetarian, a ‘escrivão das comunidades’ (a sort of Government bookkeeper, who helps the village authorities to keep their accounts straight). Pundolica is fluent in several languages – Konkani, Marathi, English and Portuguese – and often, his speech is a strange mixture of diRerent tongues. Barber

Łe village barber, Babli Borcar, has definitely leftist tendencies. In his barbearia, for a paltry sum of 75 paise, Babli gives you a haircut, shave, shampoo, and a large dose of his views on the world and local events, usually razor-sharp criticism of various personalities, rom Khrushchev to the village batcar.
