The 11th edition of Goa Arts and Literature festival was held at ICG – International Centre Goa from 17th to 19th January 2023. The event had a sustained focus on Goa’s state language and literature throughout, which also celebrated the 2022 Jnanpith Award winner -Damodar Mauzo – who is also the festival co-founder and co-curator.
2019 Nobel Prize Winner for Economics, Professor Abhijit Banerjee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the extraordinary Goan military hero Major General Ian Cardozo delivered keynote addresses on January 19 at the inauguration. The inaugural evening also saw the launch of noted Konkani writer and public intellectual Uday Bhembre’s latest novel, Vhoddlem Ghor.
GALF 2023 featured its trademark broad mix of exciting book launches, presentations, panel discussions and films. It also included separate sessions for Major General Ian Cardozo’s acclaimed new memoir Cartoos Saab: A Soldier’s Story of Resilience in Adversity, and Professor Banerjee’s brilliant new cookbook (along with
illustrator Cheyenne Olivier) Cooking to Save Your Life.
Other distinguished delegates include the superb poet/novelist Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, next-gen publisher Trisha Niyogi, pioneering indie publisher Arpita Das Ribeiro, highly-regarded Bangladeshi novelist Iffat Nawaz, and Goa’s own filmmaker Bardroy Barretto.
Goan pop-rock music icon, Remo Fernandes mesmerized the audiences with both his prose and music, as he brought down the curtains on an exciting, 11th Goa Arts and Literature Festival 2023 at the International Centre Goa in Dona Paula. Remo ended the evening by singing a medley of his most popular songs: ‘Maria Pitache’, ‘Undir Mama Aiylo’, ‘O Meri Munni’, ‘Bombay City’ and insisted that the entire audience sing ‘Ya Ya Maya Ya’ with him. Needless to say, he got a full-throated response from the audience.
