A new hack to increase crop in Goa? A farmer from Goa, Pandurang Patil, started spraying bordo-mixture on the ground instead of directly on the arecanut crop. This increased his crop by 50%.
After this, many other farmers used the same method and it ended up in plentiful crops! Patil was then awarded the ‘IARI Innovative Farmer Award 2022’ for his unique techniques and other inventions like his domestic cashewnut roaster and arecanut drying machine. He was even congratulated by Pramod Sawant. A lot of land in Goa is being used to grow Arecanut as it’s popular.
During the monsoons, fungicide has to be sprayed on the arecanuts. However, it has to be sprayed on sunny days and should not be rained on for 2-3 hours at least. Therefore, this task requires skilled labour which isn’t always available. So, Patil’s idea of spraying it on the ground is more convenient for farmers.
