The famous historical Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa will not be open for visitors during the Holy Week – 14th April to 17th April (morning).
The Maundy Thursday service will be held for devotees on April 14 at 5 pm. The next day’s service (Good Friday) will start at 3 pm. Saturday’s service will be at 6 pm. The Basilica will be reopened for visitors after the morning services on Easter Sunday (April 17).
It is the finest example of Baroque architecture in India. The Jesuits built the Basilica of Bom Jesus, between the years 1594 –1605 with its three-storied façade showing Iconic, Doric and Corinthian orders. It is the only church in Goa whose exteriors and denude are of plaster. On the gilded high altar, a small statue of Bom Jesus to whom the church is dedicated occupies a place on the base of the pedestal bearing the giant figure of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuit order.
