Famous Goan artist, Laxman Pai, passed away on Sunday at a ripe old age of 95. He had put Goa on the international art map. One of the first times he held a paintbrush was at his uncle’s photography studio. Later on, he had given illustrations for handwritten magazines.
His parents recognizing his talent, sent him to Sir J J School of Art to get an art and painting diploma. He was also a part of the Goa Liberation movement. Pai was a part of the board of studies (Painting) Bombay and Goa University as well as ex-member general council of Lalit Kala Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi. In his life, he was granted the prestigious Gomant Vibhushan award by the Goa government and is also a Padma Bhushan awardee.
When Pai had heard about the new art gallery at the Adil Shah Palace, he offered his paintings on the condition that the government would keep some money aside to preserve them.
Many artists along with Pramod Sawant, chief minister, expressed grief over his death.
