Fish to control mosquitoes in Goa? The directorate of health services has been breeding guppies in trenches, fountains, unused wells, and any water that could be a mosquito breeding area. Guppies love chowing down on mosquito eggs and larvae.
An advantage of this tropical fish is that they can adapt easily to many different environmental conditions. Using guppies to reduce the pesky mosquito population has better long-term results than using chemicals. With chemicals, the results aren’t long-lasting.
The impact of fogging only lasts for a week. If dengue mosquitoes are the target then it has to be done twice a week. Rain also washes out the chemicals.
Building contractors have been requested to use guppies if they have big water tanks in the construction areas.
