Freedom Tree

Mumbai’s ‘Freedom Tree’ home store comes to Goa, with designs, colours and elements, gorgeous enough to compete with any top-notch international brand. Impressively designed in Mumbai and produced by artisans all over India and what’s even better, is that it won’t break the bank! GLORIOUS colours, fabulous prints and flawless designs blending vintage and contemporary (The sort of which is rarely seen in India) can now be found at ‘Freedom Tree’. It excited me so much, that I’d even go so far as to say it’s every home decorators dream store. The newly opened ‘Freedom Tree’ in Sangolda has branches in Mumbai as well. The founder and design director Latika Khosla decided to expand her enterprise, with a home store in Goa, giving us plenty of quirky, graphic, fun patterns and prints to play with. “Goa is the big opus. My friends told me that my brand lends itself to the spirit of Goa. It’s everyone’s dream to have a second home here, with the sun and the sea. Freedom Tree is all about just that, being fresh and vibrant.” The store is set in a vast Portuguese house. Pops of colour engulf your senses, luring you into an intense need to buy everything. The entrance is bedecked with the new line of furnishing, which at the moment is ‘Oriental Ornamental’. The living room, bedroom and verandah are put together showcasing all their products, making it easy to gauge how it will look in your own home. If you are still confused, the well trained staff is always on hand to help with a consultation. The complete home store stocks everything one might need while setting up a new home and at a pretty reasonable rate, I might add. At Freedom Tree you will find furniture, fabric, yardages, floor rugs, bed linen, durries, curtains, lamps, lighting, ceramics, crockery, glasses, dinnerware, photo frames, mirrors, fragrances and the list just goes on. “We also customize” adds Latika “everything can be altered to one’s preference, from the upholstery on the sofas, the size of the lamp shade, the print on it and even the furniture” Latika has spent her entire working life playing with colour “If I didn’t earn or learn from colour I didn’t do the job.” She runs a Trend and Colour design studio in Mumbai and does trend and colour strategies for brands in India and overseas. She is additionally affiliated with the National Colour System in Sweden. She started Freedom Tree three years ago as she wanted to introduce fresh, young and affordable home furnishing to India using Indian artisans and Indian designers. That is her bottom line. Her designs cater to people who have the confidence to design their homes in a fun, eclectic and non pretentious way. You won’t find sets at Freedom Tree, you have the freedom to mix and match everything according to your taste. Freedom Tree’s line changes ever season. This summer’s line was inspired by Mumbai. You’ll find digital abstractions of Marine Drive, the map of Back-bay reclamation, cascades of acacia, clusters of windows and other elements that are synonymous with Mumbai city. The fabrics are printed in different weightages for curtains, upholstery, lampshades, etc. Watch out for next season’s Goa inspired line. And come Christmas, Latika has a fun ‘Tropical Wonderland’ theme in mind inspired by the lushness of the coast, with rich colours, big beautiful digitals, fractals and hand painted florals. Look no further for your Christmas shopping this year…We’ve found you the perfect shop to splurge at. Text: Vijaya Josephine Pais Pics: Courtesy Freedom Tree
