Goa is an amazing place to be… even for marine life! Did you know that the state’s rivers and wetlands have more than 84 fish species?
On World Wetland Day, data of these freshwater fish species was released. Out of the 84 species, 18 were identified for the first time! Furthermore, 15 crustacean species were gathered and classified.
According to the IUCN criteria, four of those species are in the nearly threatened category and five are vulnerable. The research is still going on and the list of species can go above 110. After all, there are around 150 tonnes of fish every year in Goa’s rivers and wetlands!
Wetlands are really important ecosystems to provide food and me but are also, unfortunately, the most endangered. To make the fish yield even better, certain measures have to be taken like widening linkage channels, desilting wetlands, united wetland management, etc. The river rejuvenation committee is working on a plan to restore Goa’s polluted rivers.
