Gunpowder

Set in the rustic chic village of Assagao, Gunpowder is a wonderful addition to Goa’s fine dining list. With some excellent food from the peninsular region of South India and Goa on the menu, Gunpowder offers traditional flavors with their own distinctive twist. Offering lazy afternoons under the shady trees, alongside some funky shopping at People Tree, this place has been a hit with the swish set since it opened its doors in Goa a couple of years ago. The food: Serving South Indian peninsular cuisine covering the coastal states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, parts of Maharashtra and Goa, Gunpowder gets it’s flavors touch perfect. Dishing out family recipes improvised over generations, the simple menu offers authentic flavors, lightly cooked, just what one would expect from a home-style kitchen. The people behind it: Run by journalist turned restaurateur Satish Warier, the kitchen is truly king here. Though he has had no formal culinary training, instinct and gut has made him follow his true passion – food. Having successfully set up Gunpowder in Delhi in 2009, Satish set up shop in this old style Goan home, a setting where Gunpowder’s fiery coastal cooking and laid-back service feels right at home.
