Hotels with Goan character

Wherever you go in Goa, one thing that stands prominently and rather majestically is Portuguese architecture. However, the Goan-Portuguese architecture has its own rustic essence setting it apart from the colonial architecture predominant in other Portuguese colonies like Macau or Maldives for that matter. The architecture of the houses, churches and other structures that were built in the medieval period by the Portuguese has left behind a trail of influences and inspirations, Which, combined with the local cultural and sociological aspects of construction is what we refer to as ‘Goan Character’. There are a lot of hotel properties that are reminiscent of Goan- Portuguese influences among which, are the following five we’ve put together.

  1. Sol de Goa
Initially launched by the name of Sol, then Sofala, and then Sol de Goa; this boutique property has for long been known for their Thursday jazz nights. Constructed and owned by Sun Estates, this property is replete with post modern facilities which are accommodated in its chic Goan architecture. From the off-white tones on its walls to traditional Goan roofs, this property redefines Goan architecture like no other.
  2. Cidade de Goa
Spread across 40 lush acres of land, Cidade de Goa is a beachfront five star property located on Vainguinim Beach. Designed to resemble a Portuguese hill hamlet, the architectural grandeur of this magnificent property has won the prestigious R.I.B.A. award internationally. Cidade de Goa strives to enrich your senses with an exceptionally luxurious Goan experience which you’ll cherish forever.
  3. Radisson Blu
The Radisson Blu in Cavelossim is unlike any other Radissons I’ve witnessed in India. This five star property surprises with every step as the entrance and the lobby is very contemporary while as soon as you move on to their villas, their bright toned exteriors and typical Goan- Portuguese styled houses won’t fail to astound you.
  4. Hotel Mandovi
Considered to be the one of the oldest hotels in Goa, there’s no doubt that along with its name and location (opposite the Mandovi ferry wharf), its architecture from the past years has also formed a part of its legacy. With a 4 star luxury status, the hotel emits a strong Goan character which can be best seen from the other side of the Mondovi river, the Mandovi Bridge, and of course its interiors.
  5. Longuinhos Beach Resort
Longuinhos Beach Resort, located on Colva Beach is nestled, in solitude away from the maddening crowds. Apart from being on the beachfront, the sight of the local fisherman casting their nets for the day’s catch and the colonial design of the resort undoubtedly calls for a strong Goan character. Even their f&b outlets have a whole lot of Goan stories to tell with its dimly-lit ambience and subtle interior design.
