A massive fire broke out on Tuesday, 10th January, at Berger Becker Coatings Pvt. Ltd factory in the Pilerne Industrial Estate around 2:40pm. Around ten fire engines pressed into service to battle the blaze. The authorities have yet to ascertain the source of the fire.
Goa’s fire department called fire engines and fire fighters from Kundaim, Curchorem, Mapusa, Porvorim to join the firefighting effort. Due to the thick smoke engulfing the Pilerne Industrial Estate the district administration subsequently issued an advisory, asking people living within two kilometers radius of the factory to shift elsewhere as the smoke could cause health issues. Nearly 200 people were moved to safety.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant along with senior officials visited the factory site on Tuesday night. “The fire was brought under control in the wee hours of Wednesday,” a senior district administration official said.
