Milk prices will increase in Goa by Rs 4 a litre. It will be implemented in a week’s time. Because of the increasing cost of cattle feed and other commodities, the Goa State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union proposed a price hike for milk.
The increased rates will apply to all types of milk. According to Subhash Shirodkar, cooperation minister, if the price of milk isn’t increased then milk production would decrease and Goa would have to import it in large quantities.
Out of the Rs 4 increase, half will go to the dairy farmers and the other half to Goa Dairy. Shirodkar admitted that it is true that the common man will be affected but farmers shouldn’t face financial burdens either. The extra Rs 4 will help around 700 families involved in milk production. At the moment, they are hardly getting financial savings as the cost of cattle feed, etc, has risen.
