Move over Mancurad… It’s Sitaphal time!

Enough about Goa’s mancurad mangoes… Let’s talk about the trending fruit in the current season – Custard Apples!

Have you eaten this delicious tropical fruit? If not, go to Goa’s local markets and get some! It is also known as ‘Sitaphal’. Custard apples have a soft and almost creamy texture. That’s why ‘custard’ was incorporated into this sweet fruit’s name.

They have a lot of health benefits when consumed in moderation. It helps reduce the risk of diabetes. It’s a very healthy snack for cravings in between meals. Custard apples are said to be good at treating skin infections and have anti-cancer properties. It also promotes heart health, eye health, and aids digestion.

Custard apples taste amazing, but there are great dishes that can be made out of them. Here is something you can try at home:

Custard Apple Pudding


4 custard apples

6 tbsp condensed milk

1 cup full-fat milk

A handful of cashew nuts  


Remove the custard apple pulp and take out the seeds.

Mix it with the condensed milk

Pour milk into a heavy-bottomed pan. Keep stirring till it reduces a bit.

After that put the custard apple pulp into the milk on a low flame till its consistency changes.

Serve in a small bowl and top it with cashew nuts.

Custard apple Chutney


3 custard apples

Coriander for garnishing

1/2 tsp red chilli powder

3/4 tsp jeera

Salt to taste

1 tbsp lemon juice


Take out the custard apple pulp and remove the seeds. 

Put the pulp and the rest of the ingredients in the blender, except the lemon juice. 

After blending, add the lemon juice and stir. 

Garnish with coriander and serve.
