The people of Goa now have another way of making a positive difference. A ‘shop with waste’ campaign has been launched by the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC). Councillor Sandeep Falari said: “With the launch of this scheme, people will be able to shop at designated locations by exchanging certain dry waste items like PET bottles and cardboards.”
The Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation have placed waste bins at certain shops- Shree Yallama Store and Bappa General Store. Zone 1 contains Ward no. 1-7 and the collection days shall be Monday and Thursday. Ward no. 8-10 comes under zone 2 – Tuesday and Friday are the collection days. Ward no. 12-18 belongs to zone 3 (collections days are Wednesday and Saturday.)
People can bring cardboard (dried and flattened), PET bottles (crushed and dried), and recyclable waste like metal aluminium, paper, plastics, and cans. These are estimated to be worth Rs.5 per kg, Rs.13 per kg, and Rs.5 per kg respectively.
The aim of this project is to foster exchanges between clean dry waste products and goods, having an excellent barter process, and improving jobs and lifestyles. This campaign will help in more effective recycling, thus protecting the environment and taking one step closer to saving our earth.
