Save River Mhadei – expressing through art

11th January 2023

Goan artists and the artist community are work on through their art to save River Mhadei. Goa has a strong voice to on this particular notion. The river originates in Karnataka but continues most of its journey through Goa. It is more than just a source of fresh water, rather it is a lifeline for Goa’s hinterland.

Sagar Naik Mule had created a series of artwork highlighting the Mhadei issue, which started two years back. Sagar says, “I have spent my childhood near the Zuari River and I understand the importance of fresh flowing water. With new modifications in the landscape there is a ripple effect on the environment that effected the flora and fauna. I have depicted the same through the 7-8 photographs, highlighting the motto to Save Mhadei. The best way to express myself was through these photos.” Using different materials, Sagar has done this beautiful photo documentation expressing his strong emotions to Save River Mhadei.

Akash Mangesh Palkar, a noted actor and director, released a documentary, ‘Mhadei-Lifeline of Goa’. It is a 30 minutes documentary that showcases the river’s entire journey from its origins in Karnataka to the Arabian Sea.

Another artists, Sainath Parab, shares strong emotions by showing River Mhadei as a tribal goddess. He created the concept and shadow illustration. It also features poetry by Guadalupe Dias with Prajakta Wadye portraying the human image of the river.
