Scientists surprised by Guitarfish in Zuari

Scientists have been surprised by some fish in Goa. In Cacra, local fishermen found some guitarfish amongst the fish they caught. These fishes aren’t spotted much. Their presence possibly indicates better water quality in the Zuari river.

Smaller fish were also caught in the Zuari estuary which is very rare. It shows that the estuary has served as a good nursing ground for them. According to fishermen, only fish that were adults or almost adults would be caught.

Guitarfish typically breed in the vast open sea amongst coral reefs and rocky outcrops. The Zuari estuary has become a proper habitat for these fishes as it has some rocky outcrops. If it was used as a breeding area, this shows that some areas of the river have improved water quality.
