A vegetable from Goa has grabbed people’s attention! It is a humble ingredient called ‘Gula brinjal’. Once upon a time, it was relished by locals but now it is grown a lot less. This goes for other plant varieties in the state as well.
The Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) has zeroed in on the Gula brinjal in the hopes of conserving it and obtaining the geographical indication (GI) tag for it. GSBB officials were excited to see this brinjal growing in a person’s garden located in Cumbharjua. It makes a great fritter dish and tastes remarkable. Even other villages grew this lesser-known white and green brinjal. However, the long purple ones from Agasaim and Taleigao have become more popular in local markets.
The Gula brinjal will be researched more for scientific validation and then the possibility of getting the GI tag for it will be considered.
