Many of the beautiful mangroves of Goa have been destroyed. Because of this, the forest minister Vishwajit Rane is going to make things stricter regarding mangroves.
They are extremely important for the environment as they store carbon to fight climate change, are natural barriers against floods and hurricanes, maintain water quality, and are breeding grounds for many animals.
Did you know that destroying mangroves is an offence under the Goa Preservation of Trees Act, 1984? Rane said that filling up mangrove areas and throwing garbage there will lead to strict action.
The forest minister along with forest officials examined the dying mangroves along the Merces-Santa Cruz route. The officials were instructed to repair the damage. The highway expansion here led to the mangrove patches dying. Meetings will be held once a month to track progress and a five-year plan will be made by the forest department.
