Here’s a slice of your good news for the day. 42 Olive Ridley turtle egg pits are being protected at the Agonda hatchery and 13 are being watched over in Galgibaga, behind St Anthony’s church. There are almost 6000 eggs at Agonda!
70 turtle hatchlings came out of one pit and they were all released. In Galgibaga, 1,427 are being preserved. A few days ago, 80 hatchlings were safely released from one nest.
During the last turtle nesting season, there were 11 Olive Ridley nests at Galgibaga and 28 at Agonda. 3000 hatchlings were released. However, this year could be record-breaking for these innocent creatures. The season is only half over and there are already 55 nests approximately. The first turtle laid her 89 eggs at Talpona beach which were then shifted to the Galgibaga hatchery.
