To protect Goa’s sensitive environment, a marine interpretation centre will be set up

Since it is imperative to protect the environment of Goa in every way possible, a mangrove and marine interpretation centre that is almost 200sqm will be soon set up in Galgibaga, Canacona. The Goa coastal zone management authority (GCZMA) recently approved this project.

They also made a plan for Goa’s four Olive Ridley turtle nesting sites. ‘No-take zones’ at these beaches – Morjim, Mandrem, Galgibaga, Agonda – were fixed to protect the ecology. The only activities allowed here are marine conservation activities. Tourists and others are allowed to enter the no-take zones as long as they don’t extract natural resources or set up shacks.

The new interpretation centre will play a role in teaching visitors the importance of turtle nesting sites, marine life, and mangroves. The government aims to protect nature and help locals generate income. This is one of the reasons to have marine interpretation centres at Morjim and Galgibaga as they will attract visitors.
